About The Project

Research & Programming

Most displaced people are relocated to towns & cities. Creating “embassy-type” community centers for displaced people in multiple key locations globally could serve as a home-base for services , resources, and community connection

The so-called “refugee crises” has been ongoing for several years now; however, there have always been displaced people in need of shelter & support. The intent with this project is to look into the current barriers to effectively supporting people who have been displaced from their homes. The ultimate goal is to utilize interior architecture concepts to improve the quality of life of those who have been displaced and forced to rebuild their lives in a foreign place.

After digging into what resources are currently provided for displaced people and what barriers currently exist that make accessing support difficult, I came upon the concept of the welcome center similar to the Refugee Welcome Center located in Vancouver, Canada. Providing a multitude of services in one major facility that helps displaced people through the resettlement process; this seems like a no-brainer, but the Vancouver Welcome Center is the first of it’s kind in the world. I envision a future where displaced people could access a center like this in any city in the world similar to how state embassies provide resources all around the world for their citizens. Studies show that most displaced people relocate to towns and cities, and with projections of environmental and conflict-related displacement only increasing, these facilities could provide much needed support when displaced people are faced with alienation and trauma from being forced from their homes into a foreign place.

Design Concept

From the very inception of this project, the goal has been to create a place that people who have been displaced can call home. As people who are displaced from their homes, and even from their countries, move from place to place, one thing remains constant: the sky. No matter where on earth you go, the sky ties us all together. That said, this building & project stand in a similar role - to tie communities together & create a point of familiarity for those who need a place to call home.
